Program Review for Wellness

Program Review Framework & Criteria

I. Connection: From interest to application (Qualitative, program head and dean)

1) Please provide a description of any changes to the program since the last cycle and the appropriate updates to the catalog (general education changes, program requirement changes, ancillary program costs for students, hours/credits of credentials, etc.).

The Wellness Career Studies Certificate was designed to to prepare a student to identify common health concerns, educate communities about resources and availability of healthcare services, and advocate for community health needs. The CSC is 26  credits and can be completed within two semesters. Since the programs original development two course changes have occurred which include the addition of HLT 250 General Pharmacology and PED 210 Introduction to Health and Development. These courses took the place of HLT 220 Concepts of Disease and PED 220 Adult Health and Development. The course changes were an effort to streamline offerings to existing courses.

2) How do students find out about the program? Please provide examples of advising activities, marketing materials, or other outreach and engagement events designed to recruit students to the program.

Currently the program is advertised in the college catalog and is also a program option on the college application. The program is also discussed with students who inquire about opportunities for health education programs that are none nursing.

II. Entry: From application to pathway entry (Qualitative, program head and dean)

1) Please provide a description of your program credentials and how they stack into one another.

The Health Technology: Wellness CSC can be stacked into AA&S Science Specialization: Health Science which is intended for transfer to complete a bachelors in Health Science or Health Education.

Questions for consideration:
1.a. What is the employability (or transferability) of each credential?

There are entry level positions for wellness CSC graduates. As noted in the college catalog "This program is designed to prepare a student for entry level employment as a wellness coordinator in community based clinics, community centers, or fitness centers." Local fitness facilities that could possibly offer an opportunity for employment includes: YMCA, GYM 24, and Planet Fitness. Should a student pursue the stackable AA&S Science Specialization Health Science there are college transfer options for completing a bachelors degree in a Health Science field which include Radford University, Old Dominion University, James Madison University, and Ferrum.

1.b. Do all credits from a sub-credential transfer into the parent credential?

Yes, the 26 credits from the wellness CSC stack into the AA&S Science Specialization: Health Science.

1.c. What is the timeframe of completion for all credentials within the program (i.e. is the program setup to award sub-credentials prior to the parent credential)?

The Wellness CSC is 26 credits an may be completed in one year. The sub credential is not being automatically awarded for individuals pursing the AA&S for Health Science.

2) Program enrollment, if applicable, disaggregated by specialization (Quantitative, IE)

The program was added to offerings for the 17/18 catalog year. There was one student enrolled. During the 18/19 catalog year three students declared the program as their major. All of the courses that are a part of this CSC are already scheduled college offerings.

a. Annual program FTE and HC over the last review cycle (To include SCHEV program ratios and SCHEV class ratios)

III. Progress: Pathway advancement (Quantitative, IE)

1) Student learning outcomes data

Outcomes Table (no data to report)

There are not enough completers to measure the designated outcomes for this credential.

2) Program credit attainment (15/12 in one semester, 30/24 for those who enrolled in two consecutive semesters)

Credit Attainment Table

Students who were in previous health programs such as the discontinued Health Science Certificate track, EMS, and nursing may have applicable credits that would apply to the CSC track requiring few credits to complete the CSC. The addition of the AA&S Health Science specialization offers an opportunity to capture additional program completion opportunities.

3) Program retention and persistence relative to the start date of the program (subsequent term calculation)

Persistence and Retention Table

This is a new program that will provide a viable opportunity for CSC attainment.

IV. Completion: Credential attainment (Quantitative, IE)

1) Sub-credential attainment and timeframe (are students completing sub-credential prior to or at the same time as parent credential?)

At this time, CSC completion is directly tied to program placement in the CSC track. Further assessment of AA&S Health Science program students would be needed to determine if there are other potential graduates.

2) Parent credential attainment and timeframe, if applicable, disaggregated by specialization

a. Are students completing within 6 semesters (150% of graduation time)?

The program has had two graduates since it began in the 2017/2018 academic year, those graduates did complete within 150% completion time.

V. Transition: Employment or transfer post-credential (Quantitative, IE)

1) Transfer outcomes (students who transfer with associate degree, students who transfer without)

CSC is not transferrable.

2) Student perspective/satisfaction

No survey data to report.

VI. Sustainability: Future Program Outlook (Mixed methods, IE, program head and dean)

1) Program forecast (major expenditures, changes, personnel needs, etc.); any future costs should be explained in this section)

There is no additional cost to offer the program, as the courses required in this CSC are existing campus offerings. The program falls under the Director of Nursing and Allied Health and is assigned as the primary advisor.

a. Any other pertinent information relevant to the review process should be provided here (e.g. community need, state/federal requirements, external accreditation, SCHEV low enrollment warning, etc.)

Not applicable

b. Employment forecast for program (Analyst data)

Industry Snapshot

Community health workers are paired with Health Educators in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data. There is an expected growth of 11% in 2018 to 2028. Note that health educators require a bachelors degree but community health workers may receive on the job training or some college education.
