Program Review for Business Administration
Program Review Framework & Criteria
I. Connection: From interest to application (Qualitative, program head and dean)
1) Please provide a description of any changes to the program since the last cycle and the appropriate updates to the catalog (general education changes, program requirement changes, ancillary program costs for students, hours/credits of credentials, etc.).
1. The college enacted a mass course change in replacing SDV 108 with SDV 100.
2. The college enacted a mass course change in replacing ITE 115 with ITE 152.
Total credits for the program is 60-62.
2) How do students find out about the program? Please provide examples of advising activities, marketing materials, or other outreach and engagement events designed to recruit students to the program.
The program is not traditionally marketed in a significant manner. This program is a general studies degree designed for business students. The catalog indicates to students it is for those who wish to enter into a 4 year business program. The program fulfills requirements needed for the first 2 years of a baccalaureate degree. Information about the program is made available to students at SEED nights and while advising at local high schools each spring. A new A.S degree with the VCCS common curriculum for business administration will take effect for the summer of 2024. The implementation of several new A.S. degrees and the conversion to a new website design will facilitate more intensive marketing efforts (e.g., brochures, career pathways website design, etc.)
For the fall semester of 2023, SIS indicates the A&S program in business administration has 55 active students. This makes it the 8th largest program at P&HCC.
II. Entry: From application to pathway entry (Qualitative, program head and dean)
1) Please provide a description of your program credentials and how they stack into one another.
There are no sub-credentials for business administration.
Questions for consideration:
1.a. What is the employability (or transferability) of each credential?
The business administration degree is designed as a transfer degree program to all four year Virginia business schools. Our main transfer partners are Virginia Tech, Radford, Old Dominion, and Liberty.
1.b. Do all credits from a sub-credential transfer into the parent credential?
N/A
1.c. What is the timeframe of completion for all credentials within the program (i.e. is the program setup to award sub-credentials prior to the parent credential)?
We do not have sub-credentials, but the business administration associate degree is scheduled to be completed in two years to transfer to a senior institution.
2) Program enrollment, if applicable, disaggregated by specialization (Quantitative, IE)
The enrollment in the program has fluctuated in recent years, but has remained relatively high as one of the most popular transfer programs. The headcount in 2022-2023 was the highest it has been since 2016 and the FTE was the second highest in the last nine years.

Business administration outcomes are based off of one content area objective that has been misaligned over the past several academic years. For 2019-20, this outcome was realigned with hopes of increasing applicability with student performance, thus increasing overall success rates. Unfortunately, student learning outcomes data indicate a mixed bag in performance. Only one of the three program outcomes was up in 2022-2023 compared to 2020-2021. The percentage of student meeting the outcome of successfully applying the principle of financial accounting was up 1%. The other two student learning outcomes were down significantly from 2020-2021, but up dramatically from 2021-2022.

Program students enrolled at least one semester as a full-time student is up the last two years over 2020-2021. The same is true for those students enrolled two semesters as a full-time student. This is a transfer program, so the pathways model should help students to complete in a more timely fashion.

Both persistence (fall to spring) and retention (fall to fall) in business administration was mostly down in fall 2022 in comparison to the previous three years, though retention was up slightly from the previous years. Business administration has been a popular program for athletes. This can skew numbers because the primary goal for many athletes is to move on the other institutions to play sports at a higher level.

VI. Sustainability: Future Program Outlook (Mixed methods, IE, program head and dean)
1) Program forecast (major expenditures, changes, personnel needs, etc.); any future costs should be explained in this section)
The business administration program will be going through significant changes beginning with the summer of 2024. The A&S degrees are being eliminated by the VCCS. The new degree will be the Associate of Science (A.S.) in Business Administration. This is a VCCS common curriculum and will include fie courses with a BUS prefix and one MKT course. The degree will have 62 credits. The common curriculum was developed as part of Transfer Virginia and should improve transferability.

1. All data based

Exits and transfers
are approximate estimates based upon occupation separation rates.
The business administration program is designed as a transfer program. The data show the potential for students that use the degree to continue on to a four-year institution and complete a business degree. This will put them on a pathway to obtain a career as an executive where this salary is attainable.
